Improvements and Projects

YORK STREET STATION

The new station represents a major capital investment by the Department for Infrastructure at the heart of North Belfast.

The station has been designed to be fully inclusive for all, will be a catalyst for further investment in the area and encourage modal shift towards public transport. Following a comprehensive community consultation process, Translink submitted plans to redevelop Yorkgate Station and in May 2020, Belfast City Council granted planning approval.

Following the completion of the project the new station will be renamed York Street Station – this will better reflect the location of the station in the centre of the vibrant North Belfast area.

Key Benefits

The redevelopment will include:

·       A new train station building with fully accessible high-quality customer and staff facilities

·       New public facilities including retail space, toilets, waiting areas and a Changing Places facility

·       Cycle parking and connections to existing cycle infrastructure, with consideration to any potential future cycle infrastructure developments in the area.

·       A new passenger footbridge between platforms

·       Increased platform width to both passenger platforms to aid passenger congestion at peak times

·       New canopies to platforms with increased cover to passenger waiting areas

·       New high-quality public realm space creating an ambient and attractive public space

Landscaping Plans

In the planning application Translink included plans how the removal of some trees and vegetation will be required facilitate construction of the new station.

Translink will be developing a new high quality landscape plan for the new station, which will include replanting of new trees, hedges, and shrubbery.

Impact of Works

Timelines

The vision for the York Street Station is to create a modern, accessible and welcoming passenger facility.  We are now beginning works to deliver this redevelopment and you may notice some temporary changes over the coming months.

GRAHAM construction will be carrying out the works on behalf of Translink and you may notice members of their team on-site.

The station will remain open for the duration of the construction work and will not affect passenger journeys.

The new station will be operational in early 2024, with the demolition of the old station completed by late 2024.

Throughout construction the current station will remain in use, with temporary diversions in place for pedestrians accessing and exiting the station.

Most of the works will take place between Monday to Friday from 7am to 7pm & Saturday 8am – 1pm.  Should any essential activities be necessary outside of these times, GRAHAM will keep the local community updated in advance as the works progress.

We wish to reassure our neighbours that we have planned measures to minimise any disturbance as much as possible throughout the work and thank you for your patience and understanding as we deliver this essential project.

Please check this webpage regularly for the latest updates or Translink social media channels.

Working With the Community

As part of the Planning process, Translink undertook voluntary community consultation which demonstrated clear support for the redevelopment proposals amongst residents and existing passengers using the station.

In line with our SPIRIT principles, we are responsible for our actions. We are good neighbours and corporate citizens in the communities where we operate.

We have already started to engage with the local community and elected representatives to explain how the works will be carried out and what to expect. This will continue throughout the duration of the project. We also hope to support local community initiatives which will leave a lasting legacy associated with the works.
