Secretary of State for NI visits Belfast Grand Central Station

The Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, Hilary Benn MP was welcomed by Translink officials for a tour of the new iconic Belfast Grand Central Station yesterday. (Wednesday 12 February)
The visit was an opportunity to learn more about this important NI Executive flagship project and the economic, social, and environmental benefits it will deliver alongside Translink’s ambitious regeneration plans for the surrounding area.
Speaking at the event Secretary of State, Hilary Benn MP said,
“I was so impressed by the scale, design and ambition of the new Grand Central Station which marks an important milestone for Northern Ireland.
“I congratulate Translink, the NI Executive and all those involved for developing such a great sustainable transport hub that will improve connectivity for the people of Northern Ireland.”
Chris Conway, Translink Group Chief Executive said,
“We welcomed this opportunity to showcase the new station, changing the face of public transport, inspiring modal shift for a better-connected society today and for generations to come. With over 600,000 additional passenger journeys since the station opened - a 10% increase on local bus and rail – the new facility is clearly delivering results.
“As key driver of economic growth and prosperity, it paves the way towards greener sustainable travel choices. There was also the opportunity to present the vision for Weavers Cross the exciting transport led regeneration project surrounding the new station.
“We extend our thanks to the Secretary of State for his support for our plans, vital in continuing to attract investment and also deliver benefits to local communities too”.
