Translink records additional 3 million passenger journeys

17 April 2025

More people across Northern Ireland choosing bus and train.

Translink has announced an additional 3 million passenger journeys were made in 2024/25 compared to the previous year, keeping more people across Northern Ireland better connected.

Chris Conway, Translink Group Chief Executive, says the passenger growth demonstrates how sustained investment in public transport pays off:

“Much progress has been made as we lead the transformation of transport in Northern Ireland, during what was a landmark year with significant achievements including the opening of two state-of-the-art passenger facilities.

“By driving modal shift we’re supporting economic, environmental and social wellbeing; public transport is crucial for delivering Programme for Government (PfG) ambitions and integral to achieving carbon emission reduction targets set out in the NI Climate Change Act.

“We remain committed to investing in our fleet, infrastructure and services to be first choice for travel in Northern Ireland,” said Chris.

Opened last autumn, Belfast Grand Central Station is Ireland’s biggest integrated transport hub, providing easy access to bus, coach, rail and active travel connections across the city and beyond, and has been a catalyst to inspire more people to choose public transport.  The station is already delivering strong performance results and user feedback is very positive with a 96% satisfaction rating.

In addition, York Street Train Station opened last April providing modern accessible passenger facilities and supporting regeneration in North Belfast while also acting as an attractive gateway to Ulster University, Sailortown, Cathedral Quarter, City Quays and Cityside.

There have also been advances in Ticketing Systems with contactless payments now available on all services making it even easier to tap and go.

Translink’s net zero commitment remains as the business embraces low/zero emission technology to decarbonise public transport and has now introduced over 250 zero emission buses into its fleet across NI travelling over 7 million emissions-free miles to date.

The business has launched a ‘Better On Board’ charter for NI organisations committed to boosting public transport use amongst their employees and stakeholders, helping deliver their own ESG goals. For further information visit www.translink.co.uk/betteronboard.
