World Police and Fire Games

"World Police and Fire Games"
26th July 2013

Dear Colleagues,

We are gearing up for the World Police and Fire Games which start next week.  We are delighted to be part of these Games which run from 1st August with the Official Opening Ceremony until 10th August. Our services will be ready across Northern Ireland as we expect around 14,000 visitors from 70 countries including 7,000 competitors competing in over 50 sports with an additional 7,000 friends and family.

We have produced a handy travel guide and exclusive WPFG Travelcards to ensure passengers can travel easily to all the sporting events, and with many competitors set to travel on our services we would ask that you give them a warm welcome and help them with their travel needs. Please support the WPFG volunteers who will be working with us at our stations to help our visitors get around, and  don’t forget to promote our range of special offers and tickets so everyone gets a great deal this summer – full details are on our website at

For the opening ceremony, our bus and train shuttle services will depart from Great Victoria Street Station / Belfast Europa Buscentre from 2.30pm. We are asking athletes, their friends and family, volunteers and the lucky members of the public with special tickets to travel as early as possible (before 4pm to avoid the evening peak traffic).   Many of the events are open to the public and free to attend, so I would urge all of you to make the most of the Games visiting Northern Ireland and come along to see them on board our services.

I would like to congratulate David Carson and his team in bus engineering on taking home a trio of awards from the annual (UK) IRTE Skills Challenge competition. This is the third year in a row of success for our engineers at the Challenge – a fantastic achievement and reflection of the excellence of their work.

Finally, the passenger transport ‘family’ across Europe is a close one and we have contacts with many bus and train operators in different countries.  On behalf of everyone, can I express my sympathy and support to our colleagues in Spanish Railways RENFE following the train derailment at Santiago de Compostela.  Our thoughts are with those who have lost family and colleagues in this tragic accident.
