Belfast Grand Central Station

Enabling Work

Delivering Belfast Grand Central Station will require a period of significant transition as essential engineering works take place throughout 2024 and 2025.

Intensive periods of engineering work are in progress in 2024 to realign the track to serve the new station. This will require some closures of the railway line and therefore disruption to rail passengers. Bus Substitution services will be put in place during these times.

Below you will find details of timetable revisions and alternative transport arrangements as part of these works.

A revised NI Railways timetable will operate from Wednesday 3 July until early Autumn

Line Closure between Lisburn and Belfast Lanyon Place

  • An express bus substitution service will operate between between Lisburn and Europa Buscentre
  • A shuttle service will operate between Lanyon Place and Europa Buscentre (Great Northern Mall) approximately every 30 minutes, serving stops adjacent to City Hospital, Queens University and Botanic*
  • A revised rail service will operate between Lisburn and Portadown
  • NI Railways tickets will also be valid for use on scheduled low floor accessible Metro and Glider services between York Street, Lanyon Station, City Centre, Botanic and City Hospital

Derry~Londonderry, Bangor & Larne Line services will operate to/from Lanyon Place

  • NI Railways tickets will also be valid for use on scheduled low floor accessible Metro and Glider services between York Street, Lanyon Station, City Centre, Botanic and City Hospital

  • Lanyon Station - For passengers going to Europa Buscentre
  • Great Victoria Street (Brennans Bar) - For passengers going to Botanic & City Hospital
  • Bradbury Place (Laverys) For passengers going to Botanic
  • Lisburn Road (City Hospital) For passengers going to City Hospital
  • University Road (Queens Students Union) For passengers going to Queens University
  • Bradbury Place (Benedicts) For passengers going to for City Centre
  • Great Victoria Street (Great Northern Mall) For passengers going to Lanyon Place
  • Lanyon Place Station - For passengers boarding NI Railways Services to Larne, Bangor & Derry~Londonderry

Enterprise Line Closure from Wednesday 3 July until early Autumn

Line Closure between Belfast Lanyon Place and Newry.

Bus Substitution services will operate between:

  • Belfast Lanyon Place and Newry
  • Portadown and Newry (NI Railways services)
  • Return trains from Dublin will connect with bus substitution services at Newry for Belfast Lanyon Place
  • Normal Enterprise services will operate between Portadown and Dublin Connolly

The following Saturday services will not operate:

  • 0936 Belfast to Dublin Connolly
  • 1221 Dublin Connolly to Belfast 

The following Sunday services will not operate:

  • 1705 Belfast to Dublin Connolly
  • 1300 Dublin Connolly to Belfast

Great Victoria Street Station permanent closure - Friday 10 May (end of day)

A revised timetable will operate from Saturday 11 May until Sunday 25 August.

  • The rail line will remain open throughout Belfast but no longer serve Great Victoria Street Station
  • Passengers currently using Great Victoria Street Station will be required to use alternative stations such as Lanyon Place, Botanic, City Hospital or York Street
  • NI Rail tickets are valid on Metro and Ulsterbus services between York Street, Lanyon Station, City Centre, Botanic and City Hospital
  • Europa Buscentre will remain operational
