Creating a Safer, More Accessible City.

The ongoing public realm works around the station are designed to prioritise active travel, improve pedestrian safety, and enhance cycling infrastructure, creating a more attractive and functional environment. These improvements will encourage footfall, support local businesses, and foster a vibrant, welcoming space for everyone.

Durham Street / Boyne Bridge Place Completion (Completion early June)

Final works will include new cycle lanes and upgraded pedestrian footways. These will be carried out while the road remains open to traffic - no further closures required. Pedestrian access from Sandy Row to the Station will also be maintained.

  • Saltwater Square

Public realm improvements and the creation of the vibrant new public space, Saltwater Square, continue to progress well and are due to complete in June 2026. While some temporary lane or footpath closures may be required to safely deliver these enhancements, we will work proactively to minimise disruption and maintain access for the local community and businesses. 

Sandy Row Works

Public realm works are underway on Sandy Row from the Hope Street junction to Boyne Court to introduce high-quality footpaths and kerbs, install new street lighting, enhance accessibility, creating a more attractive walkway to and from Sandy Row.

Traffic management may be required in instances to complete the works however disruption will be kept to a minimum and access maintained.

Road users in the area are advised to leave extra time for journeys and these works are due for completion in Summer 2026.

Great Victoria Street Public Realm works

As part of the ongoing public realm enhancement works associated with the Belfast Grand Central Station project, improvement works are due to take place on Great Victoria Street in the vicinity of Grand Opera House and the Entrance to the Great Victoria Street Mall. These works are due to be complete during Summer 2026.

Grosvenor Road - Pedestrian Access

There will a footpath closures from Durham Street junction to the Fisherwick Place junction (see below) from Wednesday 10th June for 4 weeks.  Please follow the temporary signage in place.

There will be a Lane closure from Great Victoria Street to Athol Street on Grosvenor Road.

This will be operational every day between 09:30 to 16:30 from Monday 15th Jun 2026 to Fri 19th Jun 2026.

This is to facilitate footpath resurfacing work as part of the ongoing public realm improvement works. Please allow some extra time for your journey

Translink is encouraging people to consider using public transport when travelling into the city centre during these works, as some delays may be expected for road users.

Passengers should check www.translink.co.uk or use Journey Planner before travelling and allow extra time for their journey.

Station Drop-off / Pick-up

Drop-off provision and a taxi rank for public hire taxi pick-up (Black Taxis) is in place and various pedestrian crossings are live along the road. 

There is a waiting time of maximum 10 minutes in the dedicated drop-off spaces. Drop-off provision is outlined below: 

  • 8 spaces on the Station side of Boyne Bridge Place (5 general spaces and 3 dedicated public-hire taxi rank spaces) 
  • 5 spaces on the non-Station side of Boyne Bridge Place (3 general spaces and 2 dedicated public-hire taxi rank spaces)

Please note, other drop-off areas are currently available at Value Car Parks on Grosvenor Road and at St Andrew’s Square on Hope Street.
