NEW TRAIN CARRIAGES

New Train Carriages come on-stream following £66m investment.

Following their delivery during March 2021 and after extensive testing, the first of Translink’s 21 new intermediate Class 4000 train carriages have now entered service, enabling the creation of the first of several 6-car walkthrough trains on the NI Railways network.  Following completion of the project, an additional 1,600 seats will be available across the network on a daily basis, providing much needed extra capacity and helping people return to the workplace safely.

Alongside the delivery of extra capacity and seating, this significant investment has also enabled associated infrastructure projects to be progressed including depot improvements, platform extensions and an upgrade to the driver training simulator.

Passengers will experience the latest standards in comfort, quality and accessibility with modern soft furnishing, at-seat USB chargers and upgraded air conditioning.

The ongoing climate crisis is making people rethink how they travel, and as pandemic restrictions ease, we are starting to see more people return to public transport. Many are telling us they want to use cleaner, healthier and more active travel modes as a simple way to take climate action.

With around 1,600 additional seats available on a daily basis, these new trains are also greener and more energy efficient.  This investment will help encourage even more people on board by supporting our low carbon economy, protecting the environment and ensuring a better, more inclusive and resilient future for everyone.

The remaining trains will continue to be phased into service with the last one planned to enter into operation ahead of summer 2022
