Belfast Grand Central Station
Arts and Heritage
Thank you for scanning our QR code and visiting our page for further detail on our heritage wall stories.
Arts and Heritage is set to play a big part at Belfast Grand Central Station and the surrounding public realm at Saltwater Square and we’re really excited to share with you this first large scale piece.
The art and stories displayed on this wall were created in collaboration with our local communities and stakeholders. Over many engagement session and nearly 100 1 to 1 interviews, they shared with us the fascinating stories of the area. The well-known ones and the not so well known so we could in turn share them with you. The stories on this wall are a celebration of nature, innovation, heritage and people and we hope they give you a taste of the rich history of the area and those who have made it the grand place it is!
The beautiful murals you see on the wall were all co-designed with our community and not only did they influence the designs, they actually painted the art you see on the wall. Working with renowned artist Dee Craig of Belfast Mural Arts, the community groups undertook a co-design process to express what’s important to the area. The murals are created through a technique that has been adapted from the United States of America, where thousands of murals are created and installed by what is referred to as “The Parachute Cloth Technique”. This technique sees the mural is painted on to sections of fabric in a studio (or in community centres), which all fit together and are installed on the wall like a huge jigsaw with a super strength glue. Belfast Mural Arts are the sole artists in Europe that specialise in this technique.
The purpose of this webpage is to allow you to look at all the stories from our wall in both English and Irish and also our Ulster Scots translation.
We hope you enjoy the stories and murals that feature on our wall, and please visit again soon as we build on these stories and share more.
