Translink Lineside Fencing Project

Your Safety, Our Priority

At Translink, safety is at the core of everything we do.

Our Lineside Fencing Project is a crucial initiative to protect passengers, staff, and communities by preventing unauthorized access and ensuring the safe operation of our rail services.

Better Connected, Better Protected

Aligned with Translink’s Better Connected Strategy, this project strengthens our commitment to a sustainable, secure, and reliable transport network, ready to meet future needs.

Understanding the Project

Translink uses fencing to define the boundaries of our land and to help prevent trespass and vandalism. In addition to fences, structures, buildings, and occasionally natural barriers like hedges may also serve as boundaries along the railway. We conduct regular inspections of these fences, typically on an annual basis. The type of fencing we use is determined by the land’s adjacent use, which we assess during these inspections.

Why is it Important?

Lineside fencing plays a vital role in ensuring a safe and secure railway environment. By preventing unauthorised access by people and livestock, it significantly reduces the risk of accidents, injuries, and fatalities. Moreover, it protects railway assets from vandalism, thereby supporting the safe and efficient operation of our trains.

Looking Ahead

We have commissioned a comprehensive survey to assess the condition of our entire network’s assets and fences. In addition, we plan to renew 88km of perimeter fencing over the next four years ensuring safety and reliability. This investment aims to build a sustainable infrastructure that will remain effective for the next 25-50 years
