Improvements and Projects

Muckamore Bridge Project

Translink is currently investing significantly in Northern Ireland’s railway network, including the modernisation of our infrastructure, and enhancing our commitment to continuing the transformation of public transport as part of our wide-ranging Better. Connected strategy.

As a vital public service, we are committed to delivering high quality, safe, and sustainable public transport that is crucial for the economic, social, and environmental wellbeing of our society. We help to keep people and communities connected, supporting residents, businesses, visitors, and tourists alike.

Translink is also committed to maintaining and improving our rail infrastructure to deliver a high-quality public transport network for the communities we serve, both now and for future generations. As part of this, we have plans, following approval by Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council, to construct a new bridge over the railway line, along with an associated laneway, at Muckamore View, Antrim. As part of this, two User Worked Crossings (UWC) – XL14 and XL 16 – will be permanently closed.

The new bridge and access route will offer users a safer and more efficient means of crossing the railway.

This project forms part of Translink’s wider User Worked Crossings Safety Improvement Programme, introduced in 2010.

Prior to the beginning of main engineering works, NIE will undertake some essential work to overhead electricity poles and cables. This will take place during the nights of Friday 2nd May, Saturday 3rd May, and Saturday 17th May. NIE will contact affected residents with details.

The main construction works will be undertaken by FP McCann Ltd. on behalf of Translink. As experienced and responsible contractors, FP McCann will work closely with Translink to minimise any impact on the local community. FP McCann can be contacted on 028 7964 2558, with messages to be left for the attention of Aaron Devlin.

Project Timeline

  • May 2025 – NIE carry out essential preliminary work.
  • May 2025 – Commencement of project
  • Early 2026 – Completion of project and decommissioning of existing User Worked Level Crossings

The construction programme is expected to last for approximately 36 weeks.  Most work will take place during daytime hours; however, a limited number of night shifts will be required. FP McCann will provide advanced notice of any significant activities and will be available to discuss any concerns that may arise during the project.

We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience these works may cause and thank you in advance for your patience and understanding as we work to improve your local rail network.
