Moira Park & Ride
Translink commenced work during summer 2025 on a new 480 space Park and Ride facility at Moira Train Station which will enhance the overall parking capacity at this location.
The project is due to be completed during summer 2026, enabling more people to enjoy the convenience of rail travel and supporting better regional connectivity and reliable alternatives to car-only journeys.
Translink will be working in partnership with experienced contractors FP McCann Ltd. to deliver this major project.
This expansion is part of Translink’s “Better Connected” strategy, which aims to promote sustainable travel and improve public transport accessibility across Northern Ireland.
The Moira site is considered one of Translink’s most important Park and Ride locations due to its position on the busy key southern rail corridor.
Planned Enhancements include:
- Accessibility upgrades, including designated accessible parking bays and new, improved pedestrian footpaths to access Moira Train Station
- Enhanced security and safety features, such as CCTV, security fencing, and low-impact flood lighting for passenger comfort and reassurance.
- New covered cycle shelters to support active travel options
- Environmental considerations, including a storm water retention pond to support sustainable drainage and environmental resilience. Also, high quality landscaping to enhance the site's visual integration with its surroundings while protecting and enhancing local biodiversity.
- Integration, Bus access points to facilitate seamless multimodal transport connections
- Road Access, the project will deliver several vital improvements to the surrounding transport infrastructure. Station Road will be widened to include a new right-hand turning lane into the site, helping to ease traffic flow and improve safety.
- Public realm enhancements will include the installation of new street lighting and a footpath extension, significantly improving pedestrian connectivity to the nearby train station.
- New ‘Kiss and Ride’, a new passenger drop-off area and turning circle will be constructed, improving accessibility and convenience for passengers being collected or dropped off.
Users of Moira Train Station and the existing Park and Ride will not be impacted while these construction works are underway.
When completed the enhanced facility will offer more people the option of using the train as a sustainable transport option, encouraging modal shift to help reduce congestion, cut carbon emissions and support Northern Ireland’s climate goals.
Stakeholder and Community Engagement: The project has already attracted strong interest from the local community, highlighting the clear demand for improved public transport access and sustainable travel solutions.
Translink will continue to engage with stakeholders and the public as the project progresses, ensuring the facility meets the needs of its users and delivers long-term value to the region.
Next Steps: The main construction phase got underway during summer 2025. We will continue to keep residents and stakeholders informed with updates and details of upcoming works.
Community Initiatives
Since January 2026, something really special has been happening in Moira. More than 500 young people from seven local schools have been working with Translink Artist in Residence Ed Reynolds to explore art, biodiversity, travel, and the places that connect us, as part of the Moira Park and Ride Project.
The workshops have been hands-on, creative, and full of energy. Pupils have been thinking about the wildlife around them, the journeys they make every day and how nature and public transport can work together for a greener future. Their ideas, sketches, and conversations have shaped a brand‑new collaborative artwork that Ed is creating with them, not just for them.
The final artwork will be installed at the Park and Ride site upon completion, becoming a welcoming feature for everyone who uses the site. Each school will also receive a large print of the artwork so pupils can see their creativity celebrated in their own corridors and classrooms.
Alongside the art sessions, young people are also getting involved in a lively STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) ‘Build a Bridge’ workshop, learning how design, engineering, and problem solving all play a part in creating better transport links.
As part of the project’s environmental legacy, participating schools will receive a swift nesting box and a tree, helping to boost biodiversity and giving pupils the chance to see real habitats take root in their own school grounds.
This whole journey has been about imagination, teamwork and giving young people a voice in shaping something meaningful for their community. Their ideas are now becoming part of Moira’s landscape and will be enjoyed by everyone who passes through the new Park and Ride once it opens to the public during summer 2026.
A number of exciting investment projects are already underway that will contribute to the transformation of our public transport network.
