Translink continues to invest significantly in maintaining and improving Northern Ireland's railway network, ensuring it remains safe, reliable, and resilient for the future.

As a vital public service, we are committed to delivering high-quality, sustainable public transport that supports the economic, social, and environmental wellbeing of Northern Ireland. Our railway network connects people with employment, education, healthcare, retail, leisure opportunities and essential services across the region.

To maintain the long-term safety and reliability of the network as part of our on-going programme of railway investment, essential infrastructure improvements are to be carried out at Belfast City Hospital Train Station. 

These works will help ensure the station continues to serve passengers safely and effectively for many years to come.

What We Are Proposing

Belfast City Hospital Station requires essential platform improvement works to maintain safe and reliable railway operations.

During the Christmas 2026 period, Translink will undertake works to upgrade the platform.

Due to the complexity of the project, a temporary railway line closure will be required during the construction period to allow the works to be completed safely and efficiently.

Delivering the works during the Christmas period allows us to undertake this significant programme of work at a time when rail demand is typically lower, helping to reduce disruption for passengers and avoiding the need for multiple closures at other times of the year.

Detailed planning is currently underway, and we are working closely with key stakeholders to develop construction methods, access arrangements and mitigation measures that minimise impacts wherever possible.

Further information on the scope of works, timelines and travel arrangements will be shared as plans are finalised.

Supporting Belfast City Hospital and Vulnerable Users

We recognise that Belfast City Hospital Station serves a unique and important role within the community due to its location adjacent to Belfast City Hospital and to surrounding residential areas.

Supporting patients, carers, visitors, hospital staff, rail users, and those with additional accessibility needs is a key priority throughout the planning and delivery of this project.

We will work closely with hospital leadership, healthcare partners and representative groups to address any issues, minimise the impact of the works and develop practical solutions .

Particular consideration is being given to:

  • Maintaining access to healthcare services throughout the works period.
  • Supporting patients, carers and visitors travelling to and from the hospital.
  • Developing effective wayfinding and accessibility arrangements.
  • Identifying additional support measures for those who may require assistance while travelling.
  • Providing accessible and clear information through multiple communication channels.
  • Incorporating feedback into project planning and mitigation measures.

Detailed accessibility arrangements and support measures will be communicated well in advance of the works.
