The Grand Pianist

A year of connections, a stage for celebration

Translink calls for talented pianists to take centre stage, as Belfast Grand Central Station celebrates its first anniversary.

The GRAND Pianist Competition is BACK for 2025, and Translink is once again inviting pianists across Northern Ireland to compete, marking one year of Belfast Grand Central Station.

The GRAND Pianist will see a concert piano travel across Northern Ireland, stopping at major stations for a series of regional heats, bringing music, joy and talent to everyday journeys. Amateur pianists of all ages and abilities are encouraged to step up and perform for a chance to secure a place in the GRAND Final at Belfast Grand Central Station in November

Returning as Head Judge is renowned conductor, composer, pianist, and organist Matthew Owens, who will once again lead the search for Northern Ireland’s standout pianists. A special guest judge will join him at the Grand Final to crown this year’s winner.

Announcing the second year of the competition, Translink Chief Executive, Chris Conway, said:

“The GRAND Pianist captured imaginations right across Northern Ireland last year. Now, as we celebrate Belfast Grand Central Station’s first anniversary, we’re delighted to bring it back, bigger and better. This competition is about people, connections, and shared experiences, bringing joy and talent right into the heart of our stations.”

Head Judge Matthew Owens added:

“It was inspiring last year to uncover such a breadth of local talent. I’m thrilled to return for 2025 and look forward to hearing from pianists of all ages who are ready to share their passion and creativity with audiences across Northern Ireland.”

The competition is open to pianists of all ages and abilities. Entrants may perform a short piece of their choosing (up to three minutes long). Judging criteria include technical ability, creativity, passion, and ability to deliver a memorable performance.
