Translink has welcomed Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins today (Thursday 18 June) to mark the completion of the new enhanced Moira Park and Ride rail facility in Moira.

Opening fully to the public on Monday 22 June, the major infrastructure investment delivers approximately 578 safe and secure free car parking spaces, significantly increasing capacity, and enabling more people to conveniently access rail services.

The visit provided the Minister with an opportunity to tour the transformed site and meet local schoolchildren involved in the project’s creative engagement programme which has led to the delivery of a new piece of artwork developed in collaboration with local artist Ed Reynolds as part of a wider Translink’s Artist in Residence programme.

Speaking at the event, Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins said:

“I am delighted to be here today to mark the completion of this work which has created 578 free parking spaces at Moira Train Station. These additional spaces will greatly increase the parking available in the area and therefore contribute to more accessible and sustainable rail travel. I have no doubt that this will be widely welcomed and will provide the impetus for many to choose rail as a mode of travel in the future.” 

The Mayor of Lisburn and Castlereagh, Cllr Brian Higginson, said: 

“This is a very welcome investment for Moira and the wider Lisburn and Castlereagh area. The enhanced park and ride facility will make it much easier for residents and visitors to access rail services, helping to reduce congestion and support more sustainable travel choices. It is also great to see the inclusion of community elements such as the artwork created with local schoolchildren, which adds a real sense of place and pride to the development. I look forward to seeing the positive impact this facility will have for many years to come.”

Translink Group Chief Executive Chris Conway said the completed facility will deliver real benefits for passengers and the wider community:

“This enhanced park and ride significantly improves access for people in Moira and the surrounding area, making it easier to switch from private car to fast, frequent rail services on this busy corridor. 

“The design focuses on accessibility, safety, and integration, with new bus access points, road improvements, improved pedestrian links, covered cycle facilities and dedicated drop‑off areas supporting a more joined‑up travel experience, while environmental enhancements ensure the facility fits sensitively within its surroundings. 

“I would like to thank the Minister and her Department for their continued support in delivering this important project which will further help to encourage more sustainable travel choices.” 

Environmental sustainability was central to the project’s design, with features such as a stormwater retention pond to support sustainable drainage and climate resilience, alongside high‑quality landscaping to enhance visual integration and protect and strengthen local biodiversity.

The enhanced Moira Park and Ride facility will be fully operational from 6am on Monday 22 June.
