North-West Multimodal Transport Hub

Representing an investment of around £27m, funding has been secured from the EU’s INTERREG VA Programme with support from the Department for Infrastructure and the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport in Ireland. This is a major scheme that will be a key portal for the North-West region, supporting business, leisure and tourism opportunities. It also protects the iconic Victorian station building and will be a catalyst for development in the wider Waterside and Duke Street area.’

Work is well advanced on the North-West Multi-Modal Transport Hub at the former Waterside Train Station, a grade-B listed building and much loved landmark in the city.

The ambitious cross-border project has the potential to transform travel across the North-West region.  It represents a major vote of confidence in the region by Translink, sitting alongside wider investment worth approximately £55 million by Translink in Derry~Londonderry in recent years.

To date, the 1980s-era alterations at the front of the listed building have been removed and the west elevation roof is nearing completion.  Construction work for an associated retaining wall at Browning Drive has commenced and the removal of vegetation in the area is complete.

Track and signalling work is also advancing well – there will be a full line closure between Derry ~ Londonderry and Coleraine during the weekend of 30/31 March 2019.  Bus substitutions will be available throughout.  There will be two consecutive weekend closures during June 2019 and a 12-day embargo during October 2019.

Scheduled evening works will also take place on the line between during the period 25 March – 13 April, incorporating the weekend closure.  This will have an impact on the 06:12 service from Derry~Londonderry, which will be a bus substitution until Coleraine, and the 21:10 from Great Victoria Street, which will operate to Coleraine before another bus substitution to accommodate passengers travelling to Derry~Londonderry, via Castlerock and Limavady (for Bellarena).  All other scheduled services to and from Derry~Londonderry will run without planned interruption during this period.

Translink is committed to the North-West, and we are hopeful of seeing an increased use of public transport in the region once the new Hub is operational.  Passenger numbers have grown substantially since the introduction of the hourly NI Railways service between Derry~Londonderry and Coleraine in July 2017, with passenger numbers now substantially higher than in previous years.

Phase 1 works, focusing on the station building and track and signaling works, will complete in late 2019, with other aspects of the project (Phase 2) completing during 2020.
