Chief Executive Chris Conway's weekly update to employees
Monday 27 July 2020
The news this week is dominated by a number of changing situations, and this reinforces for us all that the pandemic is far from over and that we must all continue to be mindful that circumstances can still change very quickly at present. Over the weekend we saw the changes to quarantine for those now returning from holiday in Spain and the Executive are due to meet today to discuss this issue further.
Face coverings also continue to dominate many discussions as we now enter a period of transition where it is strongly encouraged that we all wear face coverings in shops, with a hope that this will prevent the requirement for a change to legislation to make this a requirement. For public transport, of course, this is already the case and I am pleased to continue to see employees leading by example with this and supporting us to help our passengers understand the requirements in place.
We continue to see a steady increase of people using public transport again, with a busier weekend for all our services. As more people return to using public transport, we also recently resumed the cross-border Enterprise train sets to enable us to offer passengers more capacity and comfort on board, however with current restrictions there will be no on-board catering service.
It is a positive thing to be welcoming back our passengers, but with these increases in numbers it is also important for us all to remember that now not a time for complacency. We continue to have a range of measures in place to reduce the risk of transmission and to help us protect each other. It is also good to keep reminding ourselves of the basics as move through to these next stages. Please continue to ensure you keep to the social distancing guidance and the importance of good hand hygiene, washing or sanitising your hands regularly.
Pride 2020 was launched at the weekend and as with everything, it is going to look at little different this year as it goes virtual. To celebrate our commitment to Pride, and as part of our ongoing support of an inclusive workplace, this week we will be sharing an invite with you all to our virtual coffee break. Everyone is welcome to join, including LGBT employees and allies. It would be great to see you at this and for you to hear our plans for LGBT inclusion.
This morning we had a very topical webinar on managing worry and anxiety through these uncertain times. This is just one of the many support tools available to all employees. Again, I would urge everyone to continue to look after their wellbeing and use the support and information available through the employee Spirit App and our Employee Learning Platform.
Thank you and let’s go safely together.
