First ever Translink Youth Summit

25 October 2017

Registration for the inaugural Translink Youth Summit is now open, giving young people in Northern Ireland the opportunity to have their say on how Translink can help meet their current and future transport needs. The summit, hosted by Cool FM'¬s Pete Snodden, will address key areas like technology and innovation, rural accessibility, tickets and active travel.

Buses and trains are vital transport modes for the younger generation to get to school, college or university and meet up with friends, go shopping, access local health services and be more independent generally. The Translink Youth Summit #TYS17 delivered in partnership with the Northern Ireland Youth Forum aims to understand the big issues in their lives in order to shape the future of public transport here.

Chris Conway, Translink Group Chief Executive, says the special event gives young people an excellent platform to have their say: “Our first ever Youth Summit will shine a spotlight on the attitudes and values of young people as we work hard to improve the bus and rail journey experience. Their insights will influence future decision-making and help make public transport your first choice for travel in Northern Ireland.

“We’re committed to making public transport attractive for everyone; our ‘Get On Board’ Strategy is focussed on taking a collaborative approach to deliver a transformation in public transport, providing integrated services which connect people, enhance the economy and improve the environment. So it’s essential we listen to young people to understand just what we’re getting right and what barriers they may be facing.

“The way we develop our transport infrastructure and services will have a major impact on the lives of younger generations so this Summit will be a great way to join together, take action and make progress.” said Chris.

The Youth Summit is an initiative developed by members of the Translink Youth Forum which meets regularly to discuss the experiences of young people using public transport.  Bookings for the Youth Summit are now welcome from enthusiastic individuals aged 14 – 24 years or those representing a youth organisation. The event will be held in the Life Centre, Belfast City Centre, on Saturday 18 November, 11am – 3pm and booking deadline is Friday 10 November.

Natalie Corbett, Participation Development Worker, Northern Ireland Youth Forum says: “This special event reflects Translink’s ongoing efforts to work in partnership with the NI Youth Forum to help meet the needs of young people using public transport.

“Everyone who secures a spot at the Translink Youth Summit will be asked to think about a wide range of transport issues, including ticketing, engagement with drivers, sustainable travel, rural accessibility and how we can harness the latest innovations to redefine the way we travel.

“The youth summit will be an innovative and exciting opportunity to have your say and we’re strongly encouraging young people right across Northern Ireland to take part.”
