Wye Valley

A heady sense of the histories of Church, Monarchy and Parliament pervade Holme Lacy House, a magnificent Grade I listed mansion just 20 minutes from the handsome riverside town of Ross-on-Wye. Until 1909 Holme Lacy was the family seat of the Earls of Chesterfield. It is believed it stands on the site of an abbey dedicated to the Virgin Mary and St Thomas à Becket. The hotel now boosts a swimming pool, sauna, steam room, gymnasium, 2 restaurants, coffee shop and outdoor facilities such as boules and tennis.

We have day tours to the market towns of Hereford and Ross-on-Wye and the spa town of Great Malvern.

Day 1 - Monday

We leave Belfast and travel south to Dun Laoghaire, where we take the HSS to Holyhead. From there we travel through North Wales and onto our superb hotel in Herefordshire. Dinner is followed by live entertainment.

Hotel:

Holme Lacy House ***eq (4 nights)

Day 2 - Tuesday

Today we take a trip into neighbouring Worcestershire, to the spa town of Great Malvern. There is so much more to Malvern than just the hills, water and Elgar. Malvern’s town centre is dominated by the ancient Priory with its fabulous collection of medieval tiles. Nowadays visitors from all over the world still come to enjoy the spectacular views and pleasant walks and to take the waters that run freely from the various springs dotted around the hills.

Day 3 - Wednesday

Today is market day in Hereford. The pedestrianised open space of High Town, at the centre of the city, is a lively meeting place and shopping centre. Picturesque Church Street, with its many interesting speciality shops, leads up to the Cathedral Close surrounding the 11th century Norman Cathedral. The Mappa Mundi & Chained Library is open all year round and is famous for housing the mediaeval map of the world.

Day 4 - Thursday

High on a sandstone cliff overlooking a large loop in the River Wye is the historic market town of Ross-on-Wye, with the spire of the 13th century St. Mary’s Church visible for miles around. The story of Ross and the Wye Valley are displayed in the famous sandstone Market House of 1650, where there are frequently changing community exhibitions and hands-on displays.

Day 5 - Friday

We have an early start this morning as we travel northwards towards Holyhead via Shrewsbury and North Wales to catch the afternoon HSS to Dun Laoghaire. We arrive back at the Europa Buscentre around 9.00pm.
