The Walled City

The only completely walled city in the British Isles stands at the gateway to the North-West, on the banks of the Foyle. It has seen many changes through its 1,450 year history, not least in its name - Derry, Londonderry, Maiden City and even ‘Stroke City’. Today it exhibits great civic pride in both its colourful past and vibrant present - a marvellous place to visit in itself and the ideal base from which to explore the north coast from the Giant’s Causeway to the Inishowen Peninsula.

Day 1 - Sunday

We leave Belfast at 10.00am and drive north through Coleraine, past Mussenden Temple and Benone beach to Magilligan Point, at the narrowest part of the Foyle Estuary. We take the ferry to Greencastle and the Inishowen Peninsula in Donegal, where we spend the afternoon before checking into our hotel in the centre of the walled city, on the banks of the Foyle.

Hotel:

City Hotel, L’Derry **** (2 nights)

Day 2 - Monday

Our local guide joins us this morning after breakfast and shows us around the historic walls, ending up at the Tower Museum. In the afternoon we enjoy another view of the city, from the water on a Foyle Cruise. Any time left is free to explore or to try some retail therapy in the fine range of shops.

Day 3 - Tuesday

We leave our city centre hotel after breakfast and take the newer of the two bridges, giving us an excellent farewell view of the river and the city. Our first call today is Bushmills Distillery and in the afternoon we visit the Giant’s Causeway - arguably Ireland’s two best know attractions.

The final leg of this eventful short break brings us through Ballycastle, overlooking Rathlin Island. We take the Antrim Coast Road through Cushendall, Carnlough and Glenarm, returning to Belfast by 6.00pm.
