Set in 200 acres of parkland, with breathtaking views of the Clwydian Hills, the Grade II listed Bodelwyddan Castle offers an experience that’s truly unforgettable. Its ivy clad turrets, commanding hilltop position and sense of solid indomitability suggests a medieval stronghold, but its history is altogether more benign. It was the intention of the Victorians in 1830 not to raise a fortress, but to display a family’s wealth as visibly and romantically as possible. And you’re part of a fairytale from the moment you cross Bodelwyddan’s Gothic threshold.

Bodelwyddan Castle is packed with things to do - it is attached to the National Portrait Gallery’s inventive museum - the Victorian Collection. There is croquet and other indoor and outdoor facilities including pool and health suite and a four rink indoor Bowls complex plus the fabulous woodland setting with sensory garden.

Day 1 - Monday

We leave Belfast and travel south to Dun Laoghaire, where we take the HSS to Holyhead. From there we travel through North Wales, arriving in mid-afternoon at our home for the next few days in plenty of time to explore the grounds before dinner. Dinner is followed by live entertainment.

Hotel:

Bodelwyddan Castle ***eq (4 nights)

Day 2 - Tuesday

Our destination today is the historic Roman city of Chester. Start your day with a gentle stroll around the ancient city walls - the undulating pleasure of the bustling streets below juxtaposed with your first glimpse of the tranquil River Dee, gives you a flavour of what this mesmerising city has to offer.

Day 3 - Wednesday

We explore the heart of Snowdonia today calling at Betws-y-Coed (“the Haven in the Woods”) and continuing through Blaenau Ffestinog to the edge of Tremadog Bay, where we visit fascinating Portmeirion, the Italianate village on the Welsh coast. We return in time for dinner, which again is followed by entertainment.

Day 4 - Thursday

The twin limestone hummocks of the 680-foot Great Orme and its southern cousin, the Little Orme, provide a dramatic frame for the gently curving Victorian frontage of Llandudno, our destination for today. With its sweeping promenade and pier, Llandudno has retained the elegant charm of the Victorian seaside resort.
Our return journey will take us through the other well know resorts of Colwyn Bay, Rhyl and Prestatyn.

Day 5 - Friday

We retrace our outward journey back to Holyhead and take the Stena Superferry to Dublin Port. Using the new tunnel we avoid the Dublin traffic and arrive back at the Europa Buscentre around 7.30pm.
