In Flanders Fields
 

Armistice Day in Ypres, Flanders; the “Last Post” at the Menin Gate; the 91st anniversary of the end of the Battle of Passchendaele; a full day in the Somme - these are the highlights of our Flanders Fields trip to First World War sites.

Based in the Novotel Lille Ouest-Engles, on the western outskirts of Lille, the capital of Northern France - “Gallic Flanders” or, as the sign at the railway station proudly announces “Lille Flanders”.

 


Day 1 - Sunday

We leave the Europa Buscentre at 6.30am and catch the early morning HSS to Stranraer, from where we proceed to Hull. We take the overnight sailing to Zeebrugge in Belgium.

Day 2 - Monday

Today is the 91st anniversary of the ending of the Battle of Passchendaele. We leave Zeebrugge and travel to the new Visitors Centre at Tyne Cot Cemetery we get panoramic views over the actual battlefields of October/November 1917 towards Passchendaele and Ypres.

Day 3 - Tuesday

We travel to Ypres today for the Armistice Ceremony at 11.00am. In the afternoon we visit In Flanders Fields Museum and at 8.00pm we witness the "Last Post" at the Menin Gate, perhaps the most famous memorial in Flanders, opened 81 years ago this year. (Dinner not included.)


Day 4 - Wednesday

Today we drive to Albert, in the heart of the Somme area, where the "Golden Virgin" still looks down as she did in wartime. In the afternoon we visit the Newfoundland "Caribou", the trenches at Beaumont Hamel and Thiepval. We end with a visit to the Lochnagar Crater at La Bosselle before turning back north to our hotel on the western outskirts of Lille.


Day 5 - Thursday

We spend today in nearby Brugge before catching the evening sailing back to Hull.

Day 6 - Friday

From Hull we retrace our outward journey arriving back in Belfast around 10.00pm.
