In 1893 Sommerville and Ross wrote “Through Connemara in a Governess Cart”. In it they referred to Renvyle House as “the charming rambling old house”. Oliver St. John Gogarty, in his time there, played host to many famous guests including Yeats, Augustus John, Winston Churchill and Count John McCormack. He recounted:
“When Yeats was on his honeymoon he came to stay with us at Renvyle, a lovely sea-grey house in Connemara on the edge of the Atlantic, at the extreme edge of Europe.”
Renvyle House still has all the characteristics of an old Country House, but with modern comforts. Hidden in 200 acres on the edge of the Atlantic, it has its own fishing lake, beach, 9 hole golf course and much more.
Over the past few years, Renvyle has become a great favourite with Ulsterbus Tours travellers - not least because of the extensive menu and the friendly, efficient service - recently endorsed by a Gilbey’s Award for Excellence and Ireland’s Best Service Award - along with awards for dining from the RAC and the AA, and the Best Country House by the Evening Herald.
Day 1 Sunday
We leave Belfast at 9.00am and travel to Connemara and our hotel on the Atlantic Coast. Dinner is served shortly after your arrival.
After a leisurely breakfast there is a trip to charming Westport. You are, of course, free to enjoy a walk in the 200 acre grounds of the hotel or along the shore instead.
Day 3 - Tuesday
Today we head towards the Twelve Bens, along the edge of Lough Inagh, coming back by Roundstone and Clifden - the real Connemara.
Day 4 - Wednesday
The coach will travel into Galway today for a few hours in the “City of the Tribes”.
Day 5 - Thursday
Tranquility, like all good things, must come to an end, and we leave Renvyle and the west coast this morning and return to Belfast where we are expected at the Europa Buscentre around 6.00pm.
