Armagh, the oldest city in Ireland, was chosen by St. Patrick as a centre for his ‘new religion’ in 445AD - by then the area had been inhabited for some 5,000 years. As the ecclesiastical capital of Ireland, it now boasts two imposing Cathedrals and a host of cultural and historical attractions.

Its location half-way between Belfast and Enniskillen makes it the ideal location from which to explore that band of Mid-Ulster stretching between Lough Erne and Lough Neagh. The new City Hotel in Armagh is the perfect base for such a tour.

Day 1 Sunday

We leave Belfast this morning and drive west along the M1 to Enniskillen, midway between Upper and Lower Lough Erne, in the heart of the Lakelands. Sunday lunch awaits us, as does a boat to take us on an afternoon cruise, including a short stop at legendary Devenish Island to see the remains of the 6th Century monastery and the well preserved 12th Century round tower. Afterwards we turn back east and leave the Lakelands for our hotel in the historic city of Armagh.

Day 2 - Monday

A local guide joins us this morning after breakfast for a tour of the city, including visits to both cathedrals and the Palace Stables. In the afternoon we leave the city for an “Apple Blossom” tour through some 4,000 acres of pink blooms in this, Ireland’s ‘Orchard County’.

There is a little local entertainment in the hotel this evening after dinner.

Day 3 - Tuesday

We leave Armagh after breakfast this morning and travel the short distance into the geographical centre of the province, Tyrone, where we visit the very popular Ulster American Folk Park, which celebrates the strong links between this part of Ireland and the ‘New World’.

From Omagh we conclude our mid-Ulster exploration with a short drive to the shores of Lough Neagh. At Ballyronan we board our second boat, the Maid of Antrim, for a cruise across the largest lake in the British Isles. We rejoin our coach on the eastern shore at Antrim, for the short drive back to Belfast.
