Aran Islands, Connemara
& Belmullet Peninsula

This trip to the Atlantic coast of Galway and Mayo proved to be the most popular new tour in last year’s Short Breaks brochure. For 2005/06 we are pleased to be able to offer extra departure dates.

Renvyle House Hotel, an Ulsterbus Tours favourite, is our base for the first two nights. From here we explore Inishmore, the largest of the Aran Islands, and Connemara. On then to Teach Iorrais, a family run hotel in the small village of Geesala, said to be where Synge found his inspiration for the “Playboy of the Western World”. From here we check out some of the less well known features of “the West” - Blacksod Lighthouse on the tip of the Belmullet Peninsula, Eachleim Heritage Centre, the famous Ceide Fields and the hidden gem of the whole tour, Tom Hennigan’s home.

Day 1 - Sunday

From Belfast we travel west along the M1 and through Enniskillen to Sligo, where we stop for lunch.

In the afternoon we complete the last leg of our journey to our first hotel, the charming Renvyle House on the Connemara Coast.

Day 2 - Monday

From Rossavell, on the edge of Galway Bay, we take the ferry out to Inishmore, the largest of the Aran Islands (35-40 minutes journey). The superb modern boats make the outward and return journeys a memorable experience. On the island itself we step back into a different world with a visit to the heritage centre. The rest of the day is free to explore this harsh yet beautiful Atlantic Isle - Dun Aengus Fort really is worth a visit (but only for those fit for a walk over some rough ground).

Day 3 - Tuesday

This morning we drive back into Co. Mayo to visit the National Museum of Country Life in Castlebar - part of the National Museum of Ireland. In contrast, we travel on towards Foxford to meet Tom Hennigan, a Mayo man with a story to tell. For six generations his family survived here on 10 acres of poor land, with spirit unbroken; an insight into life in Mayo in a ‘real place’.

After a welcome cup of tea, we continue our journey to our second hotel, the Teach Iorrais in the small village of Geesala, said to be the inspiration for “The Playboy of the Western World”.

Day 4 - Wednesday

This morning we travel to the Belmullet Peninsula and down to Blacksod Lighthouse, with a view across to Achill Island. We call at the small Eachleim Heritage Centre, a fascinating local collection of memorabilia relating to the history of West Mayo - most notably the tragic drownings off Elly Bay and Inishkea.

In the afternoon we travel along the north coast, calling at the famous Céide Fields, the most extensive Stone Age farmed landscape in the world (at 5,000 years old it predates the Egyptian Pyramids).

Day 5 - Thursday

After a relaxing breakfast we commence our homeward journey with a short mid-morning stop at Foxford Woollen Mill and in Sligo around lunch time. We arrive back in Belfast around 6.00pm.
