Roughly the size of Northern Ireland, Yorkshire is England’s biggest county and, like Northern Ireland, it is further sub-divided. Our tour is based in the north of the county, in the charming spa town of Harrogate from where, with the aid of local guides, we explore some of the less well known parts of the Moors and the Dales.

Our day in the Dales takes in beautiful Ripon, while the tour of the Moors includes Herriot Country and a visit to the majestic Castle Howard. We also spend a full day in one of England’s most historic cities, York, where we have arranged an introductory city tour and a visit to the spectacular Minster.

Day 1 - Monday

We depart for Scotland on the morning HSS and travel through Dumfries and Galloway to join the M6 near Carlisle. We then leave the motorway and drive along the southern edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, through Skipton to Harrogate.

Day 2 - Tuesday
The Dales

Harrogate is a charming, interesting place in its own right, with stunning parks and gardens and some excellent shops so, in response to last year’s comments suggesting more time here, we start our tour with an introduction to the town and a free morning to explore (the hotel is centrally located). In the afternoon we visit the Dales with a stop in the nearby cathedral city of Ripon.

Day 3 - Wednesday
The Moors & Castle Howard
We are again accompanied by a specialist guide today as we turn east, stopping first in James Herriot Country at Thirsk, before driving into the Moors. Our tour through some less well known parts of Yorkshire concludes this afternoon with a visit to the famous Castle Howard, one of England’s great stately homes and the setting for "Brideshead Revisited".

Day 4 - Thursday
The City of York

Within the ancient walls of York we find a virtual potted history of England - Vikings, Saxons, Normans…and, plenty of shops! We have a short introductory tour of the city, concluding with a visit to the Minster - the afternoon is free to explore.

Day 5 - Friday
The North Lakes

Our route home today takes us north, between the Moors and the Dales, and then over the Pennines to Penrith. We then retrace our outward journey through southern Scotland to Stranraer. We catch the evening HSS, arriving back at the Europa Buscentre around 10.00pm.
