Western Norway is a spiritually uplifting country where steep cliffs rise from the water to form majestic mountains with cascading waterfalls and stunning glaciers. This is Fjord country, some of the most beautiful scenery in the world.
We travel by coach, mountain railway and fjord ferry through spectacular Sognefjord, Geirangerfjord and Hardangerfjord and enjoy the unforgettable “Norway in a Nutshell” Flaam Railway experience, the services of our local guide and a warm welcome on our return to the family-run Skei Hotel. |
| |
Day 1 - Saturday
We take the morning HSS to Stranraer, from where we travel to Newcastle-upon-Tyne. Here we board the DFDS Cruiseferry for the overnight sailing to Norway.
DFDS Cruiseferry (cabins with facilities - breakfasts and dinners included)
Day 2 - Sunday
We sail into Bergen harbour, in the centre of the old town, in late evening. Dinner is served before arrival and we spend the night on board ship, in the port.
Day 3 - Monday
Bergen to Voss |
We have an early breakfast in the Augustine Hotel, with the rest of the morning free to explore the old town. Walk around the harbour and famous fish market to the old Wharf area, Bryggn, with its wooden houses and painted gables. In the afternoon we travel inland to Voss via Norheimsund. Here we check into our first hotel, beside a lake, where we meet our guide who will accompany us for the next 5 days.
Day 4 - Tuesday
Hardangerfjord |
We explore the Hardangerfjord area today in the capable hands of Cort, now a regular feature of our Norway tours. He will show us his Norway at Hardangervidda Nature Centre.
Day 5 - Wednesday
Norway in a Nutshell |
The “Norway in a Nutshell” Flaam Railway excursion is one of the country’s greatest attractions. We travel first by train from Voss to Myrdal where we change trains for the outward journey to Flaam - a spectacular, slow descent with unforgettable views of mountains and waterfalls. After a break we board the fjord ferry-cruiser to Gudvangen, sailing down the narrow Naeroyifjord, with steep cliffs rising on both sides of the boat. We complete our round trip, by scheduled coach, back to Voss.
Day 6 - Thursday
Voss to Skei |
We leave Voss this morning and travel north through the heart of Western Norway to the Skei Hotel where a friendly family welcome awaits us.
Day 7 - Friday
Glacier Museum |
We have a much slower day today with less travelling. There is a visit to the fascinating Glacier Museum, with time to relax and enjoy the truly spectacular surroundings and warm hospitality of our hosts, the Skrede family. |
| |
Day 8 - Saturday
Geirdangerfjord |
Our journey today takes us to our most northerly point, to Hellysylt where we board the fjord ferry-cruiser for a memorable trip along Geirangerfjord, passing the famous Seven Sisters Waterfalls. We stop briefly at some superb view-points, most notably Dalsnibba, before returning to Skei.
Day 9 - Sunday
Skei to Bergen |
| We bid farewell to our genial hosts and turn back south, crossing Sognefjord by ferry and visiting the striking Hopperstad Stave Church, en-route to Bergen, where we check into our hotel for our final evening in Norway.
Day 10 - Monday |
We board the DFDS ship this morning and set sail for Newcastle. Dinner, bed & breakfast is provided.
Day 11 - Tuesday |
We arrive in Newcastle-upon-Tyne around 1.30pm and proceed directly to Stranraer, where we catch the evening sailing back to Belfast, arriving at the Europa Buscentre around 10.00pm. |
