Just to the south of Lucerne, on a plateau above the Sarnen Valley is the quiet, peaceful village of Flueli-Ranft, in the very centre of Switzerland.
The Paxmontana, a truly exceptional hotel, reflects the grandeur and serenity of the surrounding Alps. The interior of this dramatic wooden building has been lovingly restored in a grand style and the charming bedrooms are simple yet very comfortable, with private facilities, and no television! |
| |
Day 1 - Sunday |
We leave Belfast on the early morning HSS, to travel to Scotland and on to Hull by coach, where we catch the overnight P&O Cruiseferry.
P&O Cruiseferry (outside cabins with facilities, all meals included)
Day 2 - Monday
Eastern France |
We continue into the heart of Mainland Europe today, where we have an overnight stop near Nancy, in France.
Day 3 - Tuesday
Hotel Poxmotana |
We follow the course of the Rhine to the south, enter Switzerland at Basel and drive directly to our hotel in the small alpine village of Flueli-Ranft, to the south of Lucerne. We approach the hotel from the coach park, along a vine- covered walkway to reception.
There is a musical welcome, a complimentary drink prior to our first evening meal and a tour of the hotel highlighting the history of this exceptional building and village.
Day 4 - Wednesday
Fleueli-Ranft |
We have a day to relax in this idyllic location. Situated on a small plateau overlooking the Sarnen Valley, the village is very peaceful with some historic buildings, a couple of shops and a few other small hotels. If you wish to explore a little, Sarnen is only a 5 mile bus ride away.
Day 5 - Thursday
Lucerne |
Today we make the short journey north to Lucerne, just 16 miles away, on the edge of Vierwaldstatter See (Lake Lucerne). Here we have a free day to explore the well preserved medieval centre, with its excellent shops and perhaps the most photographed site in the area, Kapellbrücke (the Chapel Bridge). Another relaxing day in the beautiful surroundings of the Swiss Alps.

Day
6 - Friday
Bernese Oberland
| We travel a little further today, south along the edge of the Sarnen See and over the Brünig Pass to Brienz. We follow the edge of the Brienzer See to Interlaken (between lakes), Brienz and Thun, below the north side of the mighty Jungfrau Massif, at the heart of the Bernese Oberland.
Day 7 - Saturday
Sustenpass |
The high road today, travelling first along the edge of Lake Lucerne and then around the south of Mount Titles, over the majestic Sustenpass and back to Sarnen, the small town near our hotel. We return to Paxmontana in time for a last stroll in the mountains.
| |
Day 8 - Sunday
Alsace and the Vosges
We begin our homeward journey this morning retracing our outward trip through Basel, but changing direction after we pass Colmar in the Alsace area. At Kayserberg we turn west through the Vosges in Eastern France and drive into the Moselle region and our overnight hotel in Nancy.

Day 9 - Monday |
From Nancy we travel north through France and into Belgium where we catch the evening sailing from Zeebrugge to Hull.
