Lake Maggiore, or "Lacus Maximus" as the Romans called it, is the longest of the Italian Lakes, extending from Locarno in Switzerland to its southern-most point, just an hour’s drive from Milan. It divides the Italian provinces of Lombardy to the east and Piedmont to the west. Our hotel is on the western shore, at Baveno/Stresa.
On our outward journey we enjoy a memorable night in the heart of the Swiss Alps, and later travel back into Switzerland from our base in Italy, first by the narrow-gauge Centovalli railway to Locarno, and towards the end of the week, in the footsteps of Napoleon, over the Simplon Pass by coach to Zermattt, beneath the majestic Matterhorn. |
