Mount Errigal dominates the landscape of the far north-west of Donegal, Ireland’s most northerly county. It towers above the Poisoned Glen, Glenveagh Castle and Dunlewey Lake and looks west to the Atlantic, over the Rosses, Gweedore and the Bloody Foreland. Further north, the land sweeps down from Muckish towards Horn Head, Doe Castle and Sheephaven Bay.

The Shandon Hotel has been our base here for many years, offering fine food, friendly service and luxurious bedrooms, each with views over the bay. With the addition of a fabulous new spa complex, it brings a new meaning to the 'haven' in Sheephaven.

Day 1 - Monday

We leave Belfast at 9.00am and travel directly to Donegal, over the Glenshane Pass, with a stop in the Maiden City around lunchtime. We arrive at our hotel overlooking Sheephaven Bay in mid-afternoon, allowing time to settle in and relax before dinner. There will be a guided tour of the new spa this afternoon, when you can book your free two-hour session at the Shandon Spa Experience.*

Day 2 - Tuesday
The Bloody Foreland and Dunlewey

Our tour today takes us around the Bloody Foreland - the name does not refer to some glorious battle, but simply the colours that the setting sun casts on the rocks. From here we pass through the Rosses and Gweedore. At Dunlewey Visitor Centre at the foot of Mount Errigal we get an insight into what life was like here for those who emigrated to America and often never saw "Sweet Donegal" again.

We return to Sheep Haven in time to enjoy the hotel facilities before dinner.

Day 3 - Wednesday
Glenveagh Castle

We pass by Muckish this morning on our way to Donegal’s most popular visitor attraction, the perfectly preserved Glenveagh Castle and Gardens.

Our return route includes the spectacular Atlantic Drive, and we arrive back at the hotel by mid-afternoon.

Day 4 - Thursday
Fanad Head

Fanad Head today, and a drive along the edge of Lough Swilly. We stop in Rathmullan and Ramelton, and pay a visit to the Genealogy Centre for a view of the county’s past and perhaps your own. We again have some free time back at the hotel before dinner.

Day 5 - Friday
Inishowen Peninsula

After leaving our hotel in mid-morning we return home along the longer scenic route, through the Inishowen Peninsula and then by ferry from Greencastle to Magilligan Point. From there we follow the course of the River Roe to Dungiven and then back over the Sperrins to Belfast, arriving around 6.00pm.
