Improved Public Transport Information
The rural transport unit has striven to improve public transport information and bus stop facilities in rural areas, seeking to provide public transport information points in all of the main villages in Northern Ireland. Often this means the RT unit liaises with local district councils, tourist bodies and community development groups.
The public information initiatives are very much on-going, however to date five areas have benefited in a variety of ways.
The pilot schemes include:
- New London-style bus stops in 55 locations providing enhanced timetable information and a point of reference for local community information.
- Seven ornate heritage style display panels have been installed. They incorporate a public transport network map, timetables as well as information regarding tourist attractions in the area, as the rural transport unit realise that tourism often plays a vital role in the sustainment of local economies in rural areas.
- Six modern bus shelters which include provision for public transport information have been located in the newcastle area. They are aimed at imparting knowledge of local services and improving the passengers waiting experience.
- Northern Ireland’s first rural quality bus corridor along the Antrim Coast which includes new bus shelters and London Transport style bus stops in 18 locations - all with improved information detailing public transport information together with community news.
- The creation of informative promotional material - the public transport network maps, county and town centre maps - which give an overview of all Translink services, including useful contact details have all been developed under the public transport information scheme.
- The development of ‘user friendly’ departure bills which are colourful, incorporate a local map and useful promotional information eg: half price fares for those aged over 65, have also been piloted under the public information scheme. As have the innovative service leaflets, posters and promotional merchandise aimed at informing potential users of the new and enhanced services operating in their area.
