Translink Approach

Translink is formalising its approach to environmental management through the implementation of the international environmental management standard ISO 14001.

Translink began applying ISO 14001 to its Bus Services Division in 2006 to ensure compliance with new environmental legislation and to promote continuous environmental improvement.  The development of the system is in conjunction with the implementation of the OHSAS 18001 standard for health and safety within engineering and Bus operations sections of the Bus Division. 

Applying to the Rail Services Division, new legislation is being introduced by Government, which includes changes in the approach to railway safety and requires the development of a new safety management system.  The development of a railway environmental management system will commence on completion of the safety systems.  In preparation, an environmental ‘gap-analysis’ has been commissioned by the Senior Management Environmental Committee.
  
Environmental Roles and Responsibilities

Within Translink, environmental responsibility starts with the Chief Executive and, through the application of EMS, cascades throughout the organisation to ensure that every employee fully understands individual role and responsibilities.

Reporting directly to the Chief Executive and Executive Group, a Senior Management Environmental Committee directs and oversees the development of environmental work streams, establishing policy, setting objectives / targets, monitoring the performance and advising on any necessary remedial measures.

At operational level, each Translink Division or location is responsible and accountable for its own environmental performance, implementing the EMS and delivering targets.  Working groups have been established at different levels to co-ordinate the action plans and projects.
  
Assuring Performance

Periodic internal and external environmental audits are conducted to ensure operational work streams and programmes are delivering targets and overall performance continuously improves.

Complete a gap analysis and action plan regarding the future development of an ISO 14001:2004 based EMS for the Rail Services Division.
