Safety advice at railway crossings

27 February 2001

Translink wish to renew its safety message concerning level crossings across the province.

Ciaran Rogan, Translink’s Head of Marketing explained, "We wish to alert road users to the dangers of ignoring signals at level crossings. It is important to note that trains travel at speeds of up to 70mph and operate day and night. It is crucial that drivers adhere to safety signals and observe warning lights, notices, signs and other audible alarms".

He added, "At barrier crossings it is important to wait until the barriers are fully raised and warning lights are off".

He concluded, " An approaching train cannot always be heard and in good weather conditions a train travelling at 70mph takes more than half a mile to stop".
