Boarding & leaving the train
  • One step fixed to the exterior of the train at each door aids boarding.
  • A special ramp is stored on board each train, and can be brought out for use by the conductor on request.
  • Audible announcements over the on-board Public Address system state which station or halt the train is approaching.
  • Door control panels are prominent, with commonly used 'green' and 'red' coloured buttons for open and shut controls. Panels are positioned at accessible heights, both inside and on the train exterior.
  • Braille signs are used above door control points.
  • The door entrance is wide enough to accommodate those using wheelchairs, elderly or other passengers with restricted mobility, and people with push chairs.

Accommodation for wheelchair users

There is an area specifically designed to meet the needs of wheelchair using customers, and their travelling companions, on each new train. Its location is indicated by a large wheelchair symbol on the exterior of the train.

There is wider access into this area from the vestibule. There are belt restraint mechanisms for two wheelchairs (use of these is discretionary), with safety catches to secure the wheelchair user during the journey. Two special fold-down tables can be lowered as required. Seating is provided for use by people travelling with a wheelchair user.

In this area there are four handrails fixed to the sidewalls and another one fixed to the exterior of the WC module wall. There are also two 'call for aid' devices.

Toilets

Each train has 2 separate toilet facilities , located to the front and rear of the train. The standard toilet facility is unisex. Inside, a manual lever is operated to lock and unlock the doors. Outside, a light indicates that the facility is occupied. There is a 'call for aid' button on the wall, should a passenger require emergency assistance.

The second toilet facility provides disabled access. It is available for all to use, and is not just for wheelchair users or parents with children. This facility has a wide, automatic-opening door that is operated by a push button, located at a height accessible to a wheelchair user.

A second button is pressed to lock the door. When locked an additional light comes on. There is also an audible voice prompt to remind users to lock the door. Within, the facility is spacious enough to accommodate a carer when needed.

Accessibility features within include:

  • a pull-down handle by the toilet
  • 'call for aid' buttons located on the wall at two levels: low and high
  • handrails by the wash hand basin
  • information notices in Braille.

In addition, the disabled access toilet facility is equipped with a baby-changing unit.

Both toilets are equipped with:

  • a wash hand basin and mirror
  • soap dispenser
  • water - light activated tap.
