26 November 2008:
Translink volunteers take part in a corporate volunteer day at the Umbra Nature Reserve near Coleraine.
Translink employees recently showed their ‘green fingers’ when they took part in a corporate volunteer day to support biodiversity in the Coleraine area.
The team of twelve Translink staff joined forces with the Ulster Wildlife Trust for the environmental event and assisted with a range of conservation activities at the Umbra Nature Reserve, a local and internationally-important sand-dune system near Coleraine that is managed by the local nature conservation charity.
They took part in a number of practical activities including hay-raking to help sustain the area’s magnificent display of summer wildflowers, many scarce in Northern Ireland, and also helped to create ‘habitat piles’ that will provide much-needed homes for winter hibernators.
In return for their hard work, Translink staff enjoyed a guided walk to learn more about the unique habitats and many distinctive species that make this nature reserve a real gem.
With 22 nature reserves across Northern Ireland, volunteers play a key role in helping the Ulster Wildlife Trust achieve its vision of a natural environment rich in wildlife for everyone.
Andy Bate, Translink Environmental Officer, said: “The work is very rewarding and can be as rigorous or as relaxed as you like. The Translink team benefited from working in a team-building capacity and being able to assist in the practical work required. Hopefully all involved are now better placed to actively and enthusiastically promote a positive message about wildlife and conservation”.
