Passengers using Greenisland Railway Station can soon enjoy the benefits of a new park & ride facility that will make rail travel even more attractive, easy to use and hassle free.
The Mayor of Carrickfergus Borough Council Alderman Patricia McKinney, East Antrim MLA’s and local Councillors today (Thursday 20th November) visited the site to view work in progress at the station.
The existing station car-park accommodates a maximum of 10 vehicles and the new facility will increase this capacity to 72 car-parking spaces including three accessible spaces.
During the visit, local representatives were briefed on plans for the Greenisland project which also involves installation of CCTV, lighting and fencing to increase security and safety along with cycle shelter provision, landscaped areas and direct and easy access to the platform.
Larne Line Route Manager, Frank Moore, said: “There is increasing demand for park & ride services in the area and we have already invested around £0.5M in new facilities on this line. We recently extended the car park in Whitehead and together with this upgrade work at Greenisland, will greatly improve passengers’ experiences by providing better access, safety, security and comfort. We also have further plans to improve Park and Ride at Jordanstown and Whiteabbey stations.
“I am very pleased that local representatives are taking time to recognise the effort being made to provide better services for our customers and improve transport facilities within the local community. We hope that improvements such as this will encourage more passengers onboard our services.”
The new park & ride facility will be built on vacant ground adjacent to the railway line beside the station and is due to open in February 2009.
This project will complement upgrade work recently completed at the station to improve passenger access and provide a better journey experience for everyone. This work was part of an overall £17 million upgrade investment programme across the entire NI Railways network.
