Antrim Station Canopy Refurbishment to Bring Shelter from the Storm

21st August 2008:

As part of Northern Ireland Railways’ ongoing drive to improve facilities for local communities, the storm damaged canopy at Antrim station will be replaced as part of a £250,000 restoration project next month.

The work, which is due to commence on Monday 1st September and finish by Spring 2009, will ensure the canopy will provide cover and shelter for waiting passengers, while retaining its listed characteristics.

Frank Moore, Translink Route Manager, Northern Area, explains, “Antrim Rail Station is a grade B2 listed building,  as such we will ensure the renovation work is sympathetically carried out so that the station retains its original authenticity, whilst providing modern shelter for our customers.

“We will ensure there is minimum disruption and keep passengers, local representatives and community groups informed of progress. For health and safety reasons and to maintain services for passengers we will need to do some of the work at night, however we will ensure any noise is kept to a minimum.

“NI Railways’ continued programme of upgrades across the rail network is being met with approval by passengers and numbers using our services are continuing to grow. We look forward to completing this important work and to providing a better facility for our passengers in Antrim.”
