Translink Introduce New Penalty Fare

11th August 2008:

Translink announced today new measures to tackle fare evasion on the rail network and are introducing a new penalty fare for offenders.

From today, fare evaders will be issued with a £20 fine plus the value of their journey which they can pay on the spot or within 21 days.

The new penalty fare is in accordance with government legislation and brings Translink in line with many other rail operators in the United Kingdom.

General Manager of Rail Services Mal McGreevy explains ‘Fare evasion is a serious offence as such we welcome this new legislation. We take a tough line on all anti- social behaviour including fare evasion. Last year around 200 people were prosecuted with total fines of almost £30,000 given to offenders. Elimination of fare evasion will allow us to offer a better value service to all our fare paying customers.’

Passengers are advised that it is their responsibility to purchase a ticket from the ticket desk or conductor. Revenue protection officers will carry out ticket checks on- board trains at stations and halts.

This new penalty fare scheme will be advertised on posters throughout all stations and on board the trains.

Metro and Ulsterbus passengers should also be advised that the fine for fare evading will also be £20.
