Translink Takes Delivery of New Rail for Londonderry Line
15 April 2008:

Pictured – Translink’s 1,500 tonnes of new rail being delivered to Coleraine. This rail will form part of the life extension project on the Londonderry line between Ballymena and Coleraine – provided for under the recently agreed NI Executive budget.
The track life extension project on the Londonderry line between Ballymena and Coleraine – provided for under the recently agreed NI Executive budget – moved a step closer today as Translink took delivery of 1,500 tonnes of new rail.
This new rail will be used to complete the works which are planned to get underway in late 2008, following a competitive tendering process due to commence next month.
Clive Bradberry, Translink’s Infrastructure Executive explains, “This new rail will be used to enable the removal of the track joints between Ballymena and Coleraine as well as the replacement 5 miles of track between Ballymena and Ballymoney as part of the overall engineering works planned for autumn 2008 to late summer 2009. Work is progressing well on the repair of all ‘wet spots’ – areas of weakness in the stone supporting the track – between Ballymena and Coleraine. The work is due to be completed this summer.
“Once this overall engineering project is finished, our passengers will be able to benefit from faster, more comfortable journeys and allow train speeds to be raised once again.”
