29th Ulster in Bloom Competition rewards ‘blossoming’ Gardeners from across the Province

Northern Ireland’s ‘blossoming’ gardeners are celebrating today, (13th March) following the presentation of plaques for the 29th Translink Ulster in Bloom competition.

The awards presentation held at Edenmore Golf and Country Club in Magheralin paid tribute to those councils and local communities who were responsible for making their local villages, towns, cities and local businesses areas of beauty using imaginative planting, colour, texture and sustainable planting.

Translink Chairman Mrs Veronica Palmer OBE offered her congratulations to the winners of the annual awards, “This plaque presentation represents the culmination of so much hard work and effort from gardening enthusiasts across Northern Ireland. Once again everyone involved must be congratulated and be extremely proud of your efforts which contribute enormously to enhancing our local communities for everyone to enjoy”.

She continued: “We are proud to once again be associated with this competition which brings communities together in mutual appreciation of Northern Ireland’s beautiful and unique natural environment. Using public transport is also key to the pursuance of an eco-friendly lifestyle and the right choice for the community, for the environment and for sustainable development. We have already seen considerable passenger growth across the network and to this end we will continue to promote public transport as a safe, reliable and cost effective travel option”. 

Alderman Arnold Hatch, NILGA President, said: “The standard of the entries are a true reflection of the competition’s continuing popularity. At NILGA we are thrilled to be involved with such a prestigious competition which makes a real difference to the communities of those involved both socially and economically, as many businesses report considerable increases due to the enhancement of their local area.”

Orla Farren, Communications Manager, NITB added: “The Ulster in Bloom Competition has gone from strength to strength. The awards are a shining example of how keen gardeners in Northern Ireland pull together to take pride in the appearance of their cities, towns and villages.

“This selfless commitment from the local residents, and the partners involved, has succeeded in making Northern Ireland a more attractive and beautiful place to live and I have no doubt their creations have left a lasting memory for many of our visitors to take home and talk about with friends and family.

This year’s competition received outstanding entries across 12 categories, which included categories for Floral Station, Community Rail Halt and the Crystal award for outstanding effort and enthusiastic contribution to Translink Ulster in Bloom throughout the council area.
