Stay safe this Easter with Translink

29th February 2008:

As the Easter holidays approach Translink is urging principals and teachers across Northern Ireland to get on board and join its campaign to promote the safe use of both bus and rail services for a safe and happy holiday.

Lynda Shannon, Communications Manager for Translink said, “While safety is a top priority throughout the year the school holidays can be a time for particular concern as children tend to be out and about so much more and are often unaccompanied.  They can be unaware of the risks of playing or messing around on or near public transport or railway lines, it is therefore vitally important for people to take on board the importance of playing safe this Easter.

“We have a strong commitment to the safety of children and young people across Northern Ireland and as such we want to make sure they are well informed of the safety issues surrounding public transport and the dangers of carelessness on roads, rail and bus.

"With quieter trains travelling at up to 70mph and taking more than half a mile to stop, the potential tragic consequences of this are only too obvious. We would appeal to parents, teachers and the wider community alike - to teach our young people that railways tracks are not play areas and that, in fact, they present extreme dangers if proper care is not exercised”.

“The Translink safety bus team and local bus and rail managers regularly visit schools and small communities with a range of safety material, which illustrates safe use of both buses and trains. This material includes a leaflet highlighting the top tips for the safe use of buses, and an interactive ‘Travel Safe’ DVD and Learning pack for teachers and pupils based on key stage 3 of the National Curriculum.

Further information about Translink’s safety initiatives are available in station. Passengers can also visit the Translink website at www.translink.co.uk.
