Translink and IKEA launched green commuter initiative
Joining forces as champions of environmental awareness, Translink and IKEA are encouraging the retailer’s entire staff-base to use public transport to get to and from work.

Translink’s Corporate Commuter Initiative (CCI) saw travel passes provided to all 450 co-workers and 150 support staff, which entitled them to free travel on Translink services within Northern Ireland from Monday 10th to Sunday 16th December to coincide with the store’s opening.

The award-winning and incentivised scheme was aimed at increasing awareness and the use of Translink services by businesses across Northern Ireland. Since the store opened the involvement and uptake by staff was excellent with them welcoming the opportunity to avail of the free travel and enjoy a more cost-effective and reliable alternative way to get to work.

Translink’s Brand Manager Carol Marsden explained: “Our objective was to identify and work in partnership with employers that wish to be environmentally responsible. Together we ensured all personnel had access to timetables and our on site surgeries provided staff with travel information particular to their individual needs. By encouraging staff to trial the bus or train our goal is to persuade most to use public transport regularly to get to and from work.

“IKEA is one of the most environmentally friendly companies that exist and we are delighted to work with them in this way to support their ongoing, intensive environmental awareness campaign. Indeed, we welcome the opportunity to work with any local businesses that are committed to developing green travel plans for their staff whether they or new organisations or those relocating staff to new premises,” added Carol.

Nigel McGarry, IKEA’s Environmental Manager said:” IKEA is committed to caring for and preserving the environment and actively promotes green travel using sustainable modes of transport, both to staff and customers. As part of this, details of IKEA’s ‘Green Transport’ plan as well as its home delivery service are displayed in the Customer Services area and in the General Office. In addition we use our plasma screens, tannoy system and newsletters to promote the Green Travel plan.”
