Today Alastair McClune, from Ballynahinch High School, became the 13th student to be presented with Translink’s prestigious Ulsterbus Cup.
Alastair fought off 1096 candidates to pass the chequered flag in pole position by attaining the highest result in GCSE Motor Vehicle and Road User studies, winning this award for his school for the first time.
Presenting Alastair with his award, Mr Dan Harvey, Translink Deputy Chairman said, “Translink are committed to safety and we are very proud to be one of the driving forces for this initiative, we would like to congratulate Alastair on his achievement.”
“The hard work he has put into this GCSE will give him vital knowledge of all aspects of road safety, which he can use for the rest of his life. He has achieved an excellent result in this very practical GCSE, and it gives me great pleasure to present the Ulsterbus Cup to such a worthy winner.”
Cathal McKeever, Senior Road Safety Education Officer at the Department of the Environment, who also attended the award ceremony added:
“This achievement shows a very high level of commitment from Alastair to a very important life skill. Over 68 schools took part in the Ulsterbus Cup and 1096 pupils were involved. Alastair and all the pupils involved will be able to put into practice on a daily basis what they have learned, at a very important time when young people want to learn how to drive. Vehicle and road safety is essential for young people, with 126 road deaths in Northern Ireland last year and over 90 road deaths to date in 2007, this highlights the need for young people and everyone alike to wake up to the importance of staying safe. I would like to thank Translink for its continued support.”
