Lagan Valley MP and MLA Jeffrey Donaldson and local MLAs Jonathan Craig, Basil McCrea and Edwin Poots have today gone on site to view progress on the construction of a new £2.5million bus centre for Lisburn.
Having gotten underway at the end of 2006, the new facility is due to be completed in spring 2008. Designed to meet the needs of a prosperous city that boasts excellent infrastructure and a booming retail industry, the bus centre will cater for over 70,000 people who live in Lisburn City Centre as well as visitors and those who work in the area.
The new bus centre, situated on the corner of Hillsborough Road and Smithfield Street, will be of the highest specification. It will be fully compliant with the latest disability access requirements with low-level ticket desks and an induction loop for the hard of hearing. In addition, new covered departure stands, heated waiting area, electronic screens carrying up-to-the-minute journey information, CCTV and a dedicated parent and baby room are due to be installed, while staff are also looking forward to enhanced facilities which include a new canteen and meeting room.
Translink’s Local Manager for Lisburn, Jim McCauley said, “Translink is committed to providing first class facilities for passengers and colleagues and this new bus centre will offer greater convenience, comfort and accessibility for everyone. It is extremely important for local representatives to see the steps we are taking to upgrade our facilities for the local communities that they represent, and we would like to thank them for taking this opportunity to visit the new Lisburn station today.”
“On behalf of Translink I would also thank our passengers, staff, and local councillors and business people for their ongoing support; we very much look forward to welcoming them to their new station in the near future,” concluded Jim.
