Travelling by public transport is travelling wise - Translink

17 September 2007:

Translink has today welcomed Regional Development Minister Conor Murphy’s pledge to ‘Travelwise’ by swapping the car for public transport.

In a statement, Translink Marketing Executive Ciaran Rogan voiced his hope that many people will now follow the Minister’s example.

Mr Rogan said: “We welcome the Minister’s pledge and his commitment to public transport. Traffic jams and parking issues are persistent problems for commuters in private cars. But with our massive programme of investment and the recent introduction of enhanced services I am sure that the Minister will find that public transport is a stress-free, cost-effective and time-efficient alternative.

“Over recent years, Translink has managed a £50 million project for 350 new buses, an £80 million project for new trains and a £13 million contract for 110 new school buses. This I feel demonstrates our commitment to invest in sustainable transport options."

He added: “Through initiatives such as Travelwise the message is clear that using public transport is the environmentally friendly option.

“Everyone agrees that buses and trains are the right choice for the environment and it is good to see that the changes we have made to improve public transport are paying off with more people choosing the bus and rail option.”
