Local Upper Bann MLAs and representatives have today gone on site to view the progress of major upgrade work carried out by NI Railways at Lurgan station.
The work is part of a £7 million investment package to upgrade stations and halts across Northern Ireland, in order to deliver a better rail service. At Lurgan station most of the external work has now been completed, including new signage, shelters, lighting, seating and re-surfacing. Internally toilets and low floor ticket windows will be installed while waiting facilities for passengers will also be improved. Overall the work – which is set to complete in early 2008 – will deliver enhanced accessibility for disabled passengers and improve the environment and journey experience for all passengers.
Translink’s Property Manager, Tom McClintock said, “It is a very exciting time for N I Railways, and as such it is extremely important for local representatives to see the steps we are taking to upgrade our facilities, for the local communities that they represent. We would like to thank them for taking this opportunity to visit Lurgan station.”
The second phase of the project is due to start before the end of the year, which will see stations on the Larne, and Derry Lines undergo similar upgrades. The overall project is due to be completed next summer.
Passengers can access the latest information regarding the project by logging on to www.translink.co.uk or by contacting Translink’s Call Centre on 028 9066 6630.
