Belfast Central has received the top accolade at the International Best Station Awards in York last night (31 October).

Also winning the large station category for a second year in a row, Belfast Central beat off competition from 15 other stations worldwide. Judging took place in September with the panel assessing stations in terms of passenger facilities, customer service, cleanliness, community involvement and innovation.

Translink’s Central Station Manager Andrew Morrissey said: “We are delighted to receive this recognition on an international scale. I pay tribute to all my colleagues whose consistent hard work, strong customer focus and attention to detail has earned us this prestigious title. We now embrace the challenge to maintain these high standards for our passengers and hope to retain the title for years to come.”

The International Best Station Awards seeks to establish best practice within the industry.  In addition it provides an opportunity to learn from other European practices and to raise the profile of public transport.

Central Station was officially reopened in March 2003 following a £6million refurbishment programme to provide park and ride facilities, bicycle shelters, CCTV, customer café and shop. It is N I Railways flagship station catering for 50,000 passengers each week.  It is the hub of the main commuter lines and the main departure/arrival station for the cross border Enterprise service.
