Continuing its support of the Ulster Cancer Foundation’s Breast Cancer Awareness drive, Metro was on board this morning to transport Pan’s People dancing queen and guest of honour, Babs Powell to a special luncheon organised by the charity.

At the event the Ulster Cancer Foundation and Metro revealed that there have been over 1,000 visitors so far this month to Translink’s specially produced microsite www.metrothinkpink.co.uk, while the number of calls to the free and confidential breast cancer helpline number - 0800 783 3339 - has almost doubled. In addition the average duration of calls has also risen from a couple of minutes to 27 minutes, identifying the use of the helpline to provide emotional as well as professional support.

During the month of October all Metro buses across Belfast carried the helpline number and the familiar pink ribbon logo, reaching a huge and diverse audience, including the 400,000 people who use Metro services each week, as well as other motorists and pedestrians.

Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer amongst women in Northern Ireland - around 900 new cases of breast cancer are diagnosed every year with 1 in 12 women developing the disease during their lifetime.
