New improved Ulsterbus services on the way for Dungannon

26 October 2006

Ulsterbus this week announced details of a new and improved bus service for the Dungannon area, scheduled for introduction in November as part of Translink’s wider Ulsterbus Strategic Review.

Local Ulsterbus District Manager, John Kidd explained, “Designed for ease of use the new simplified and standardised modern route network will offer better services for more people. Key improvements include: an enhanced and extended timetable for the Dungannon Town Service, beginning at the new earlier time of 08.00 and operating on an hourly basis right through until 18.30, Monday to Saturday; easier connections with other Ulsterbus and Goldline services; greatly enhanced accessibility with the introduction of new low floor vehicles and improved passenger information in simple, easy to use colour-coded route maps.

“In addition, Smartcards, for use on Town Services, will be available free of charge until the end of January 2007 meaning passengers only pay for their journeys and a special introductory £1.20 off-peak adult day ticket will be available until the end of January 2007.

“Improvements will also be made on Dungannon County Key Routes with services operating between Dungannon and Cookstown on an hourly basis, between Dungannon and Coalisland every half hour and between Dungannon and Armagh, Portadown and Omagh every two hours.”

With the changeover date set for the 20th November, Translink has recruited three new drivers and will introduce three extra buses to operate these additional services.

Ulsterbus currently operates a half hourly Express service between Dungannon and Belfast and has recently introduced a bi-weekly service to Sprucefield Shopping Centre.

“However, while much has been achieved there is still much to do and Translink is committed to working in partnership with the Department for Regional Development (DRD) Road Service and Dungannon and South Tyrone Borough Council to address key infrastructure issues such as current difficulties at Market Square” John added.

Translink’s Ulsterbus Strategic Review will be completed over three years and is designed to transform attractiveness, effectiveness and efficiency of Ulsterbus services. It is designed to build on the early successes of the Belfast Metro and new improved Goldline services (14% and 22% growth respectively).

Passengers who would like further information about the new Ulsterbus Dungannon services can contact Translink’s Call Centre on 028 9066 6630 or alternatively contact the Dungannon Ulsterbus depot on 028 8772 2251.
