Pupils To Benefit From New Translink 'TravelSafe' Resource

NEWS RELEASE
23 March 2006
Students across Northern Ireland are to benefit from a new educational resource produced by Translink. Called 'Travel Safe', the resource includes an Educational Safety DVD and Learning Pack for schools.
The pack has been specifically developed for use by Key Stage 3 pupils and their teachers and aims to encourage students and young people across Northern Ireland to think about safety issues and the effect their behaviour on public transport can have on themselves and on those around them.
Translink’s Head of Marketing, Ciaran Rogan encouraged teachers to contact Translink for their free copy.
"Schools can get their hands on a free copy of 'Travel Safe' in one of three ways, they can contact their local depot, contact the Marketing Department on 028 9089 9400, or they can visit Translink's website www.translink.co.uk."
Mr Rogan added that safety remained a top priority for Translink, "We currently take around 20% of Northern Ireland's school population to and from school on a daily basis - that's about 65,000 children and young people.
"We are committed to improving safety standards and thankfully accidents involving school children are very rare. This new resource is the latest innovation to be implemented in an ongoing program of safety initiatives and public safety education campaigns.”
He added, "The Travel Safe resource conveys a very important message about travel-related safety issues and safety of pupils on board school transport.  We cannot emphasise too strongly the importance of good behaviour both on board buses and in their immediate environment.  It is essential that drivers should not be distracted and rowdy behaviour puts everyone on the vehicle at risk and can even endanger other road users and pedestrians."
Translink's Travel Safe DVD encourages discussion of safety issues by providing key messages and scenarios for debate as well as a variety of role-playing and other exercises.
"We want our young people to enjoy public transport and see it as an integral part of their society. This pack has been specifically tailored to communicate with a very discerning audience, who are heavily targeted with sophisticated marketing messages on a daily basis. It is an audiovisual and interactive resource, which allows them to become involved with the subject matter.
"We hope this pack will become an invaluable tool in the promotion of the important safety and behavioural messages for them", Mr Rogan  concluded.
