(L-R) Tom McClintock, Translink’s Property Manager, Mal McGreevy, NI Railways General Manager and Kerry Greeves, ARUP Director, unveiled plans, artists’ impressions and details of its new £11.4 million train cleaning facility, currently being built on its Fortwilliam site overlooking the M2 Motorway.

The new facility is being built specifically to accommodate the cleaning of the 23 new trains, which are scheduled to go into service over the next year.

The 170 metre long, 30 metre wide and10 metre high structure will be capable of stabling and cleaning up to ten of the three unit, C3K trains at a time. The futuristic aluminium clad building will incorporate an external train wash area, facilities for the removal of waste from onboard storage tanks, a refuelling station, workshop, drivers accommodation, storage space and office facilities.

“This investment will ensure that our new trains are maintained to the highest possible standards,” explained Mal McGreevy, NI Railways General Manager.

“We paid great attention to detail in the design, development and construction of our new trains to ensure that passengers will benefit from the latest technical innovations. The new cleaning facility will enable us to ensure they remain in first class condition.“

Although the new trains will be cleaned every evening, when the cleaning facility becomes fully operational in April next year, ten trains will be intensively cleaned on a nightly basis. This means that each of the 20 new trains in daily service will be intensively cleaned inside and out, once every 48 hours.

“As a result, our passengers can expect the highest possible standards of service and cleanliness onboard the quieter, quicker and more comfortable new trains. This project is another step towards delivering a modern, efficient new rail service for Northern Ireland.” Mr McGreevy concluded.

Ends.
